Why we went
It's called America's most scenic train. We wanted to see for ourselves.
We had just stepped off a 52-hour train from Miami to Chicago, and by the end of this trip we would spend close to 100 hours on trains. So we weren't easily impressed. We split the Zephyr into six stretches and scored each one on three things: the wow factor, the range of views, and whether it looked as good in person as it does in pictures.
By the end, we called it the most scenic train we've ridden so far. It isn't faster and it isn't cheaper than driving or flying, but the Rockies, Glenwood Canyon and the red rock canyons near the Utah line are things you simply can't see from the highway or from 30,000 feet.
