Why we went
We came to catch a salmon. We found a whole town riding on the run.
We had barely pulled into Pulaski before we saw a man walking down the street in his waders. From the first bridge in the middle of town, people were hooked into fish up and down the river, all calling out the same thing: fish on, coming up, or fish on, coming down. Neither of us had ever been salmon fishing, and we were a little intimidated.
Over two days we got outfitted at the tackle shop, drifted the river with a local guide, learned at the state hatchery how these fish ended up here in the first place, and finally tried our luck on a private stretch of water. Everywhere we went, people told us the same thing: without the salmon run, this town would look very different.
