Why we went
It started with a jar. It ended with a love story.
A few weeks earlier, filming on Florida's Forgotten Coast, we bought a jar of tupelo honey and couldn't figure out why it tasted different from any honey we'd had. That jar led us to Gary Atkinson and Pam Palmer of Blue-Eyed Girl Tupelo Honey. Gary told us this honey only comes from one place, and only for about two weeks a year. The window was about to open, so we came back.
Gary is a former carpenter who says the idea to keep bees came to him in a dream, three nights in a row. He is now going into his eleventh season, and he keeps his prices low so the people of Wewahitchka can afford the honey made in their own backyard. We came for the harvest. We stayed for the people.
