Why we went
We came looking for a town without technology. We found a town that listens.
The internet says cell phones are illegal in Green Bank. We lost service an hour before we reached town, our maps kept rerouting, and the first sign of civilization was a roadside stand advertising one hour of Wi-Fi. Then we came around a bend and there it was, a white telescope taller than anything for miles, standing over a cow pasture.
The real story turned out to be more interesting than the rumor. People here have phones, they just don't have much signal. They memorize numbers, wave at every passing car, and tune in to a local AM station for everything from flood warnings to lost dogs. All of it so scientists can hear signals from the edge of the universe.
