Why we went
We came for the world's largest truck stop. We stayed for the people.
At first Iowa 80 is almost too much to take in: the size, the trucks, the constant movement. Then you notice what's upstairs. A barber, a dentist, a chiropractor, showers, laundry, a gym and a movie theater. If your life happens on the road, getting a haircut or seeing a doctor gets hard, and this place solves those problems.
Once we stopped looking at the trucks and started talking to the drivers, the story changed. We met a man who has put 900,000 miles on one truck, a veteran who carried a flag through Iraq, and a couple who have been married 34 years and trucking together for 22. Then they invited us to dinner.
